Meaning
A nickname for the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus—official home of the [[en/Palabras/Pelús|pelús de la Iupi]], said here with affection.
Some people use la Iupi for the entire UPR system, but Río Piedras students strongly reject that usage.
The naming debate
Río Piedras students insist that la Iupi means Río Piedras only. Other campuses have their own nicknames: UPR Mayagüez, for example, is El Colegio.

Origin
The name probably comes from pronouncing the first two letters of UPR in English: “U-P” → “you-pee” → Iupi. Honestly, we still have [[en/Dichos/Ni puta idea|ni puta idea]] exactly where it came from.
UPR Río Piedras is a major center of student activism, art, and the humanities. The nickname carries campus pride, political engagement, and a distinctive bohemian identity, in contrast with the engineering and technical reputation of El Colegio.
Political connotations
Río Piedras students have historically been associated with the left, social activism, and pro-independence or socialist positions. That reputation grew through decades of student strikes, protests against the United States military presence—including Vieques—and resistance to cuts in public-education funding.
Depending on the speaker, calling someone an estudiante de la Iupi may imply:
- Positively: educated, socially committed, politically aware.
- Negatively: radical, “communist,” disorderly, or always wasting time on strikes.
Puerto Rican music and politics sometimes invoke la Iupi as shorthand for educated leftists or izquierdosos, often loosely and dismissively. Tempo used the campus this way during his tiraera with Residente, presenting university education as pretentious and contrasting it with street authority.
